Are marionette lines making you look unhappy or stern?

Firstly let us look at what we mean when we say marionette lines. Marionette lines are different from wrinkles because they don’t just make you look older, but can cause the face to look sad or angry.

What are marionette lines?

Marionette lines are those particularly deep lines that run from the corner of your mouth down your chin – so called because they give the appearance of dolls create back in the turn of the century where the mouths open and close – also seen heavily on German nut crackers, but lets just leave it there! The term is often also used to refer to nasolabial folds occurring around the top of the mouth up to the corner of your nostrils.

What causes marionette lines to appear?

As we age, the ligaments near the chin and mouth loosen. Fat deposits in the face also begin to deplete, creating hollowness under the skin. Collagen in the face also naturally decreases with age causing skin to crease and fold around the mouth and while not everyone experiences marionette lines, they can be quite bothersome for those who do. The appearance of marionette lines usually gives the person an expression of being particularly unhappy or strict. It is fair to say that neither of these looks is one most of us are going for. It is worse however, if you are a naturally outgoing person, because those seemingly simple lines on your face totally change the way people respond to you.

Is there a way to prevent marionette lines?

It is believed that genetics play a large role in whether or not you develop marionette lines. Of course there are certain things that can work to exacerbate the issue, like too much sun exposure (which is less of an issue here in the UK!), smoking and poor diet – Or living, as I like to think of it.

Solutions for marionette lines

The marionette lines are a common location for filler injections and are one of the most successful treatments around. It isn’t anything specific to do with the treatment, it is more that the changes you see and feel are really very dramatic – of course we always make sure that at the end of the treatment you still look like you!

I only ever use fillers containing hyaluronic acid, which are simply used to fill in the space under the lines to tighten skin. Hyaluronic acid attracts moisture, which helps plump up the area longer, because the acid can hold 1,000 times its weight in water. It is an extremely effective solution to these deep crevices around your mouth.

So if you are unfortunate enough to supper from marionette lines and no longer want your face to show emotions that you may not even be feeling, then why not drop me a note or give me a call and we can arrange an informal, no cost consultation to see what can be done about it.

If you’re not current seeing the effects of aging around your mouth, here is a tip that is worth thinking about to keep the dreaded marionette lines at bay – dehydrated skin will lead to lines and wrinkles as surely as night follows day. So – sip plenty of still water between meals, eat lots of vegetables, salads and fruit, and do not forget the good fats – plenty of olive oil, nuts and seeds as well as oily fish.
